All of these photos were taken remotely through video chat

This project was born out of the pandemic. During lockdown, I started experimenting with shooting through video chat. Sometimes they are simply screenshots from a Zoom call, others are using software that allows to shoot photos with a phone’s camera remotely, like FaceTime or CLOS.

The intention had different levels. First, simply to connect with others and have a creative outlet during isolation. Second, to allow the subjects to project their personalities and their intimate spaces into a digital medium. Their homes, their daily routines, their emotions while being confined and isolated.

The video call as a medium is very limited, but it encourages creativity and problem solving. It also provides special aesthetic qualities. For some pictures I used digital enhancement with artificial intelligence, for others I let the original texture and low quality show through. When the medium is evident, it affects the interpretation in the eye of the viewer. When you know that the shoot was done remotely, you become aware of the subject’s isolation, when you realize that they had control over their phone or computer, the picture becomes like a small window into their intimate lives, which the subject herself is letting you see through.
